MS Internet Explorer

Updated: November 15, 2001

The best way to test HTTP-Tunnel.com's tunneling service is via Internet Explorer, which is available on any windows based system. The first step is to go to the download page and download the latest version of the HTTP-Tunnel Software.

After you have downloaded it, please install it. It should generate a few icons in your Start -> Programs -> HTTP-Tunnel menu. Please go into the Start -> Programs -> HTTP-Tunnel menu and click on "HTTP-Tunnel Client". This will launch the HTTP-Tunnel client on your system and will immediately start using the HTTP-Tunnel free servers.

The servers that the HTTP-Tunnel service uses are preprogrammed into your client and automatically fetched over the internet. Note that you MUST be connected to the internet and MUST be allowed to surf any web page on the internet for this to work. If you cannot go to HTTP-Tunnel.com, please visit our FAQs.

At this point you have executed the HTTP-Tunnel client and you should see the following window:

You should read the disclaimer and check the "agree with the terms above box". At this point the HTTP-Tunnel software will display a prompt which asks you if you want to setup the configuration now. Click yes.

You will see the following screen which asks you for your proxy server name. If you have an HTTP-Tunnel proxy then it would be the correct time to enter that. If you do not, then please check "No Proxy, only a firewall". You should know if your proxy requires authentication, if it doesn't, don't bother checking that box either.

Note that this product is for power users and that an extensive level of knowledge is required to simply understand what HTTP-Tunnel does. If you are not sure why you are using this software, consult someone who is more knowledge with your problem. Perhaps write on the forums and see what you should be doing. It could be that you don't even need HTTP-Tunnel's service to solve your problem.

At this point you should click the Test button to see if your configuration is setup properly. HTTP-Tunnel will attempt to fetch a web page and if it is successful, it will display that. This will also mean that our service will work on your machine. If it fails, then you should contact IT with your proxy server information, or look in Internet Explorer itself.

Now that you are connected, you should see the following HTTP-Tunnel client dialog.

The IP address of the server has correctly been retrieved and you are all set to privately surf the internet using Internet Explorer.

Note that if you use HTTP-Tunnel to surf the internet this adds the benefits of having a fully encrypted transfer and it allows you to be able to surf the web without any corporate intrusion technology monitoring the URLs you are surfing and the content that is being transfered through your connection to the internet. Also note that the IT will be able to notice users surfing to HTTP-Tunnel.com, which may result in IT blocking that address if they deem this service a threat to their corporate network.

Disclaimer: HTTP-Tunnel has taken great care to allow a private surfing experience. The HTTP-Tunnel service does not allow any servers to be installed behind a corporate firewall and in no way is less secure than any VPN.

At this point you may minimize the HTTP-Tunnel Client, which will appear on the system tray.

You may now start Internet Explorer and click on Tools -> Internet Options. Then switch to the tab named "Connections" as illustrated below.

Now click LAN Settings and another window named "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings" will pop up. You must check the "Use a proxy server" box and click Advanced.

Please go to the Socks box and type in 127.0.0.1 which means "please use my machine as a SOCKS server", and type in the port 1080 which is the default port for a SOCKS4/5 server.

At this point you may click Ok on all the dialog boxes to get back to Internet Explorer. Now double click on your HTTP-Tunnel Client icon to pop it up and switch to the connections tab. All the items in the tab should be empty as described below.

Now you must go back to Internet Explorer and visit your favorite web page. I will be visiting HTTP-Tunnel.com since it is my favorate web page! You should notice that the HTTP-Tunnel client now shows many connections open in the "Connections" tab which we just opened. You will arrive at your web page, albeit much slower while using the free service, but you will arrive there.

Looking at the Connections tab you can verify that the Internet Explorer traffic is going through the HTTP-Tunnel server. Congratulations, now you can use the HTTP-Tunnel service for many other things than private, secure web surfing.

The HTTP-Tunnel free service has a bandwidth limit of 2 kilobytes a second. If you would like this bandwidth limit removed, you can purchase the service.

All tests were carried out using Microsoft Windows XP Professional, HTTP-Tunnel 2.7.1853 (beta), and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2600.
